Life and career advice book by Cal Newport, the guy that writes study blog. He offers a few pieces of advice, kind of similar to Larry Smith’s book:
- Don’t pursue your passion, because most people don’t have any passion that can be turned into a career
- Focus on career capital, that is, increase your value by being really good at something
- After acquiring career capital, convert it to control, so you have more freedom over your work (as opposed to more prestige or money). Control is what makes careers fulfilling.
- Have a mission, but more importantly, take small steps towards achieving it.
All of this sounds pretty reasonable, I guess I’m mostly on track in my life. I especially agree with the third point, in which you shouldn’t just pursue a higher salary and bigger house and simply accept that your job must be unfulfilling, which is what my parents think. I would trade salary for freedom to travel, which one of the people in the book did.
