Book Summary: So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport

Posted on January 3, 2017April 7, 2022
Topics: Self-Help / Career

Rating: 7.0/10.

Life and career advice book by Cal Newport, the guy that writes study blog. He offers a few pieces of advice, kind of similar to Larry Smith’s book:

  1. Don’t pursue your passion, because most people don’t have any passion that can be turned into a career
  2. Focus on career capital, that is, increase your value by being really good at something
  3. After acquiring career capital, convert it to control, so you have more freedom over your work (as opposed to more prestige or money). Control is what makes careers fulfilling.
  4. Have a mission, but more importantly, take small steps towards achieving it.

All of this sounds pretty reasonable, I guess I’m mostly on track in my life. I especially agree with the third point, in which you shouldn’t just pursue a higher salary and bigger house and simply accept that your job must be unfulfilling, which is what my parents think. I would trade salary for freedom to travel, which one of the people in the book did.
