Collection of about 15 short stories by a woman who lived in Tofino and worked as a tour guide. The stories display life in the wilderness of Vancouver Island, the beauty as well as the dangers, such as a boat losing power during a storm, getting lost in the dark, encounters with wolves. Other stories are more mundane slices of life without immediate life-and-death dangers, like loneliness in winter, struggling to build a floathouse, balancing parenthood with adventure.
Overall, I didn’t like the author’s writing style very much, it’s too emotional / sentimental. A lot of the author’s problems felt like they were the result of her poor planning, and could’ve been avoided had she been more practically minded. I also dislike books with collections of disconnected chapters, they’re unsatisfying to read, should stop buying these in the future.
